@Gina,

Have you tried calling Motherrisk Hotline of Toronto. They are very good at providing proper information about risk or safety of prescriptions and over the counter drugs during pregnancy. I used their service while I was pregnant and taking medication both prescribed and over the counter. Their number is 416-318-6780 and their website address is http://www.motherrisk.org/women/index.jsp

We cannot comment specifically on your situation or make clinical recommendations; you have some very good questions that you should bring up with your doctor. What this study tells us, however, is that untreated anxiety is not without its own risks and this should be taken into consideration when making decision regarding the use of medications during pregnancy.

Im 38 yrs old with severe anxiety disorder around 5 wks pregnant and was told a few years ago that it was ok to take low dose of Klonopin (my dose is 0.5mg). My doctor at that time said if we weigh our options, being less anxious outweighed the risk of the drug.

Can someone tell me if this drug is ok to take through my pregnancy or should I look into switching medications? Thank you.

Could your organization set up a support group for women with anxiety disorders to convene and meet during pregnancy? That would be hugely helpful...

Interesting findings, but I'm concerned that the authors, "...were not able to control for the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy, nor were they able to control other factors which may have affected birth outcomes, including nutritional habits or smoking."

This seems like a huge omission to me. Also the small sample size (n=371) concerns me. Can one really use the title, "Panic Disorder Increases the Risk of Adverse Birth Outcomes" on such a small sample? Titles like this get picked up my mainstream media and result in the general public not fully understanding the research methods.

I do think this study presents interesting findings and I hope additional research is done to further explore this issue to help inform and improve medical care for women with panic disorders.
